I’m pleased to announce my participation in Project Honey Pot. I’ve contributed an MX domain as well as set up a “honey pot” on my blog as well as pledging an MX domain and honey pot for every domain that I own.
Project Honey Pot is a distributed system designed to identify spammers and spambots that scrape e-mail addresses from webpages. The data collected by Project Honey Pot is used to prosecute spammers who illegally harvest e-mail addresses from websites; An API is also available for developers who would like to utilize the project database against unwanted SPAM. The project also provides several other services available to active members of the project, including site SPAM monitoring, IP spam monitoring, and other features that have nothing to do with monitoring.
The Project provides two ways to help. People who want to participate and have access to a web server with any number of scripting languages can set up a “honeypot.” Participants who own domains can also opt to donate an MX record. If you don’t have direct access to a web server but operate an online blog, you can simply place a link to a honeypot.
If you would like to participate but don’t want to sign up for the project, you may place a link to my honeypot on your website. Place the link below into your webpage to set a trap on your site. Don’t worry. This link won’t display on your page for normal users to click, but spam bots will see it in the page source.
