The Word of Chaos

Here are a few of my favorite points of the conversation where I try to talk my mother and brother through setting up a projector on an IBM Thinkpad. Trouble follows. My church at home is celebrating it’s 100th homecoming, so they decided to do a picture slide show of the church and it’s members.

Me: Okay, activate the dual display by holding the FN key and pressing F5. That’s usually what button it is. It may be a different button though.
Them: That’s what it says. It doesn’t work!!!

… Five minutes later, I get the brilliant idea to do a Google search for the Thinkpad laptop…

Me: What does the blue type on the F4 key look like?
Them: It looks like a monitor.
Me: Try pressing FN and F4.
Them: It’s works!!!
Me: Out of curiosity, what’s the blue type on the F5 key look like?
Them: There isn’t any blue type on the keyboard.
Me: I thought you told me there was…?
Them: Oh well… I don’t know…

I love memkeys too…

Them: So, we can’t find the file when we save it with OpenOffice?
Me: Did you try saving it with your memkey rather than Maw’s?
Them: No. I tried to pull it out of the back of the computer and the end came off.

It’s wonderful to get phone calls like that at 8:30 in the morning on a Sunday.
