So, my blog looks considerably different at the moment. I’ve moved from Dreamhost to Linode as my hosting provider. My hosting needs have matured as I’ve gotten older and more experienced. Sadly, I realized this when Dreamhost attempted to auto-update my blog. This normally wouldn’t be a problem except that WordPress’s updater tried to kill my existing blog posts. I was able to save my posts just before the fall out.
Linode doesn’t offer simplified shared hosting like Dreamhost does. You’re given the keys to a semi-private server with a virtual machine that is completely private. None of the work is done for you. I spent last night installing Ubuntu Server 8.10 on my VM, configuring Apache, and getting WordPress running. It was a long night, but I’m considerably happier with the results than I was with Dreamhost.
I’ve got the old blog posts saved, and I’m going to try to restore them somehow. There was some good information that a lot of people benefited from. Wish me luck.
