Comcast, Ecobill, and the Comcast Ads I Just Received in the Mail

Excuse me, Comast. Let me ask you an honest question. I would receive bills printed on sheets of paper when I first began service with your fine company. I would always opt to pay the bills via the online payment system, because that’s what all of the cool techie kids do. I kept thinking “Gee! It sure would be nice to get these in my e-mail! We’d save a lot of paper like that!”

As if you were reading my mind, Ecobill appears in the distance! Ecobill will allow me to get my billing statement in the mail. Your commercials proceed to tell me that this Comcast’s way of being environmentally responsible. “Excellent!” I think to myself and go off on my merry way.

So, if Comcast is trying to be environmentally responsible, then why do I keep receiving these paper advertisements in my mail box? If I want to upgrade my service, I’ll call and tell you about it! This seems ridiculous. You have no problem saving paper if it’s informing us of a fee we are legally required to pay, but you seem to be willing to cut down entire forests if this would get me to upgrade to a more expensive package. Your message is becoming a little contradictory.

Don’t mistake me for a raging environmentalist. I just try to do my part. I turn off lights in my house when I’m not using them. I try to maintain green servers (to the best my budget can allow). I drop off printer cartridges at Office Depot. I try to take my papers and such to the local public bins for recycling. I sure can just stick the Comcast advertisements in the paper bin for the recycling plant, but how about you just stop sending them to me at all Comcast?

I’m glad we had this discussion.

Why can’t Valve release a game on time?

Please, Valve, explain to me why you can’t release games on time. You released the Left 4 Dead 2 demo late. It was ridiculously buggy for anyone with the misfortune of trying to run it on Windows 7. I made it through the demo once. I crashed every other time.

Now, it seems that you’re 10 minutes late with the Left 4 Dead 2 game. I’ve already getting messages containing “this won’t unlock until tomorrow zomglol”. Your forums also appear to be down. If you just unlocked the game, we’d all be happy.

We would like our game now please. kthxbai.

Yes in Pittsburgh Footage

I’ve not updated this in a while, so I’ll try to do a better job of writing meaningful updates. Until then, here’s a few videos I took of the band “Yes” when they played in Pittsburgh, PA. If you want to see more, check my YouTube page. The link is on the left side.

Ubuntu 9.04 - “Agent admits failure to sign key” Bug

So, Ubuntu 9.04 is most definitely the new sexy.  My first experience with it has left me in awe.  My laptop boots in the time it takes for me to turn around and plug the power adapter into the wall.  It’s sleek and sexy in almost every way, and, if you haven’t downloaded it yet, go update or do a fresh install.

Unfortunately, an ugly bug showed it’s face when I tried to authenticate with my web server after generating and adding keys.  When attempting to ssh into the server, you may be denied with an error:

agent

Lovely, isn’t it?  Luckily, it appears that the fine fellows that hang out on the Ubuntu and especially Mr. Dustin Kirkland were hot on the case.  Dustin found a way around the issue.  The problem can be fixed by simply changing the environment variable SSH_AUTH_SOCK to absolutely anything.  agentfix

This seemed to fix the issue for me, so thanks to Mr. Kirkland and the fine folks on the Ubuntu bug tracker!

Root Canals Suck

So, I’m looking at a three-day weekend here.  I’m pretty excited about the prospect of wasting time with my little brother all weekend, but I’m not too thrilled with the odd feeling in my teeth.  I had the distinct pleasure of getting a root canal at 12:15 today, and, even though I was numbed like crazy, it still sucked. I didn’t experience physical pain, but I did feel some crazy kind of nerve pain.  It wasn’t a terrible pain like I was crying and twisting in pain, but it was the kind of infrequent pain that surprised me.  The plus side to the whole root canal thing is that your tooth feels better almost immediately after the operation.

My 360 has died again, and it’s on it’s way back to Microsoft to be repaired again.  I’m considering selling the old 360 and buying an Elite that won’t die on me every few months.  I’m getting tired of messing with it.  Too bad most of my games are on 360, so I’d just move to my PS3 permanently.

That’s all for the moment.  I’m spacing out enough as it is, and I need to sleep.

Planet MSG: Test 2.5

Let’s see if this post appears at http://planet.mountainstategamers.org.  If so, we have success!!!

EDIT: Okay, let’s see if this works this time.

Test Planet MSG

I’ve been pretty busy lately keeping up with school and the development of Mountain State Gamers.  In fact, this is really just a quick post to test out the Planet MSG we’re launching.  Community members with a blog can add special tags to the Planet, and their blog posts will appear on a community RSS feed.

Rather than creating our own community blog system and trying to get users to write on our blogs as well as theirs, I thought it would be better to just let you specify which posts are gaming-related and might be of interest to the MSG community.

Look for a full website very soon!

Full Motion Monday: Kinetic Wave Sculptures

Maker Profile - Kinetic Wave Sculptures on MAKE: television from make magazine on Vimeo.
I saw the video for this week’s Full Motion Monday on Make Magazine’s podcast this week. The beginning of the episode talked about this one fellow and his obsession with making kinetic wave sculptures. I won’t say much since I’ve got a lot to do tonight, but I’ll end by saying that things like this seriously makes math awesome!

Thoughts on Mountain State Gaming

I’m sitting on the 10th floor of ESB right now. It’s very quiet up here, which may be due to the fact the elevator only goes to the 9th floor. I’m blogging to pass the time while I wait for my research partner to show up.

We’ve been working very hard on getting Mountain State Gamers ready to go. I drew up a logo a few nights ago, and Matt’s been playing with it a bit while I’ve been busy with real life. I believe we’ll have a basic page with forums in a month or so. I’m excited to be returning to a gamer community.

Nothing quite beats the real feel of a gamer community. I remember the thrill of checking the LANville/Pre-LANville forums daily to see what new duscussion had started or what a crazy response someone had posted while I was away. This feeling was probably compounded by the fact that these were all local people. We were in east reach, but the forums were fun when we couldn’t get the whole group together. It was indeed a tight community.

I’ve been thinking about MSG and wondering how we can build a stronger community outside of the school atmosphere. There are plenty of pro’s and con’s at play here.

The pro’s are obvious. We are no longer forced to obey the school’s code of standards. Swearing can be allowed (although I think a swearing filter should still be in place to an extent.). Leadership cannot be forced out of their positions as easily if the leadership is the highest level of the organization (i.e. no school advisor). The selection of people to follow in footsteps is also much broader. This prevents new leadership being picked from the “best available options.” There are more pro’s, but these stand out at the moment.

The con’s are mostly related to funding and promotion. A standalone group no longer has school funding at their fingertips and must find another path to receive funding. An accounting staff and finacial account support is also normally unavailable for no charge. Promotion of a site and event are also much easier on a college campus. Few people would disagree, although exceptions are certain to exist.

So, where does MSG stand? Since our separate departures of LANville, the original staff have moved on to learn new things. I’ve personally learned a thing or two about getting sponsors and gained more insight into leadership through my job at WVU MAE. We are all reuniting with our original drive to stand out while bringing our new found knowledge to the table.

Several things will be different. My experience enables us to talk to video game developers for contests on the site. We have the advantage of having key people across the state to promote without stepping too far from their normal routine. We’re also acquired the foresight to not strive to wipe out other communities. Our goal is to unite communities and provide a mechanism for easy communications. Wiping out a community with competitive practices goes against that goal PERIOD!

I hope that MSG will exist as a vehicle for wonderful things, to unite gamers and their communities, to promote the positive and often overlooked aspects of gaming, and to stand up for political issues in the state that are important for gamers (I’ll elaborate on this further later).

Stay tuned for more MSG info!

Full Motion Monday: Cat vs. Printer

I almost forgot about Full Motion Monday today. It’s been a rough week, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better. That’s why videos like this one are important. I laughed my butt off when I first saw this video. The sound effects definitely make this video special. Too bad I can’t get my dog to beat the crap out of my printer, huh?
